Dawn of Darkness was an excellent RPG/adventure/action game that was dumped by Ward Six Entertainment in 1999. It's not well-known, but it is a real gem, so make sure you play it.

Dawn Of Darkness takes place in a long vanished world of mighty forgotten empires and magic. It is the tale of a once revered Lucitanian warlord, Roarke The Merciless, caught between his obligations to his family, his empire and his honor.

You are Roarke the Merciless, imprisoned in the captured Manawyd monastary by an army from the Cheitan Empire who have attacked the village you have lived in. Roarke is an elite fighter, if perhaps a little out of practice since his days as one of Lucitan's greatest warlords. You begin playing armed with only the dagger Roarke had hidden in his boot, you must escape and find Sylmaril. How you do this is up to you. The game is played with basically the most of the same controls as Quake 2, except for the new commands and items bindings we've added.

Dawn of Darkness is a complete Total Conversion, including all-new weapons, bad guys, maps, textures, models, etc. There is even a new inventory system, and a character dialogue system where you can talk to anyone.

Weapons include a dagger and sword which you use by attacking while moving the mouse in the direction you wish to swing. Each weapon also has an alternate attack mode which do things like punch, block, etc. You can also get a bow, crossbow, pistol, blunderbuss, even a shovel. Some weapons have magical properties, like the sword which goes into Bloodlust mode when you're particularily lethal, and you can decapitate enemies.

Quake II 3.20 is required.

DoD skies

The above shows a texure that it is animated which can be saved as a .wal.

It can be applied as a sky, but it will be used as a texture, not the proper way.

The skies will be made for windows to look trough and for parts of the ceilings. The textures are .pcx and .tga, 256X256 resolution. The images are tiled.

Here is some wild way how to use this mode with Quake 2 RTX raytracing.
It was invented in head of Discord Quake mapping user Paril, i only was someone whose actually tried it..

You have to start vanilla Quake 2 (no RTX) dedicated server with Dod installed - dedicated Quake 2 server exe could be downloaded from internet..
- make backu copy of config.cfg from roarke directory game like to mess within and it include unique keys mapping, which is not available elsewhere
- you have to edit its roarkes/autoexec.cfg within roarke directory, to enable coop..
set hostname "Roarkes"
set rcon_password none
set deathmatch 0
set coop 1
set skill 1
set maxclients 4
set fraglimit 10
set timelimit 0
set allow_download 1
set allow_download_players 1
set allow_download_models 1
set allow_download_sounds 1
set allow_download_maps 1
- start quake2 dedicated server with these parameters:
"D:\Games\Quake II\Q2dedicatedServer.exe" +set game roarke +set cheats 1 +set coop 1 +set skill 1 +map dod1_1

- start Quake 2 RTX with DoD installed:
\q2rtx.exe" +set game Roarke
- open console and write:
connect localhost

Disclaimer, when you start game by this way, you will see only black environment, until you get to areas with sky, where raytracing is actually working, so for know just showcase.. so have to switch at the start to opengl renderer, go outside prison and switch to RTX renderer to enjoy.

To make raytracing someone would be to make, some minimal light cheat, or add some *.mat to project: "Q2RTX works by having materials emit light, so you have to make .mat files which tell the game what materials emit what light, what mask to use, etc"
And maybe add some parameters to lights..

This game seems interesting IF IT WORKED.

Yamagi can't find the text files for the dialogs, the config is all messed up, the new bindings aren't exposed to the menu, the game logic refers to items outside it's folder and set an absolute path for a few things... The "packaging" stage of this mod ISN'T DONE AT ALL.

Love this mod. Any idea how to get this working with Quad Touch on Android? I can load the game but when the opening dungeon cutscene ends and the map loads I spawn with a handgun and there are no NPCs.

I finished the first level but i had to noclip to the temple because i think the scripts woudn't work.

Doesen't have music, but one music clip was made on the former site in archive.org
It is the full game, but the original developers didn't make a sequel.
If you follow directions by us and Eric, you will do just fine.

I'm using this game in Steam, can someone explain the exact process of how to get this to play? I want to check this game out it's just "quake2.exe +set game roarke" isn't working at all. Can somebody explain how to run this?

I'll re-upload Dawn of Darkness, once I fix the bug in the Adrianna file! It is a Full .exe file, you won't need the Steam version to play. It may be around mid May... look for it then!

I have been absent from the DOD board and modding for over a year now, it looks like I need to return!
