Humans won many of the battles with the Combine, but eventually the alien waves and numbers overran them. The commands came from up high to temporarily surrender themselves into bondage with hopes that the future would bring a chance to overthrow their captors. Post surrender, the combine's use for humans was extensive, but not limited to labor. Entertainment for the alien culture was promoted through brutal games pitting human against human with strict penalties for the losers. Unfortunately for the combine, the human race has a different plan.
