Heart of Evil: Napalm Edition (HOE NE) is a remake of the original Heart of Evil. Heart of Evil was an enjoyable Single Player modification that truly gave the player something different - "a Single Player Half-Life mod that accurately and sensitively depicts the American 'experience' in Vietnam, right down to the laces on the zombies boots.”
HOE NE will let veterans and newcomers alike relive that experience. They put a lot of work into the original concept and we want to it endure. For that reason we updated the mod as best we can. The source code was released publicly February 1, 2007. Shortly after, we started development. By shortly, we mean months.
HOE NE features updated Models, skins and animations; revitalized Maps with new effects, visual improvements and altered gameplay; tweaked NPC and weapon code.
This is a community project. That means it’s not for profit. All work will be properly credited to its respective owners. This is not a Source project/port.

This mod is a total conversion for Half-Life, offering players the chance to dip into the crazy world of wartornzombieinfested Vietnam. For players new to Heart of Evil, you are placed into the boots of Special Forces officer Captain Percy Freeman, who is tasked with despatching the villanous (and extremely mad) Colonel Kurtz. Not long after beginning your mission you are betrayed, and forced to find your way to Kurtz on foot.
Along your way you will have to deal with rogue US Soldiers - apparently they think you're a traitor, and have been tasked with hunting you down. Not only are there US Soldiers after you, but also Huey helicopters! These Helicopters are deadly since they have front gunners, side gunners, rocket launchers and the ability to drop off troops. You'll will need to carefully plan their movement around a Huey helicopter in order to take it out with an M79 or RPG-7!
After fighting your way past rogue US forces, you come up against the uglier side of war. Unkillable zombies! Or are they? Any sort of explosive will kill a zombie, anything less than that will knock them down momentarily.
Like the original Heart of Evil we have kept the vast free roaming environments, but we have made the puzzles within them more straightforward, so that backtracking is kept to a minimum. Objectives are clearly marked with glowing markers, and the levels are also considerably easier to navigate.
We would like to thank people who have been watching the mod so patiently - we hope this lives up to your expectations! Saddle up, lock and load and head into the world of Heart of Evil...

The mod currently is NOT SUPPORTED by the actual version of Half-Life in Steam (25th Anniversary update). It causes "Save/Restore overflow" error, which makes impossible to play normally (game saves and level change between maps are broken). The solution is to use Xash3D FWGS Engine (only Windows PC version) to play the mod.

I'm loading into the first map, getting into the truck and am stuck (in the skybox?) after loading into the next map. Is it problem with launching it or the download file in just straight up messed up? The putch provided didn't fix the problem
had the same problem. what i did was use the pre 25th anniversary version of half life 1, you can do that on [properties] --> [betas]. it will appear as steam_legacy.
If you want to play Heart of Evil, do not touch to this pile of trash
Just play the original or the Source port instead.

This is a remake of the original classic that's not nearly as good. Questionable new models, weird effects, terrible dialog that tries hard to be funny are only some of the issues with it.

There's also the Source Engine port (which IMO is the best version of this classic mod): Moddb.com
it also fixes the janky stuff from the original as well, while adding new stuff.
I prefer playing HL mods on HL engine.
Then it's your loss.
After all, Source port not only fixes the terrible AI, but also adds new stuff like more scenes and quality of life improvements like storing notes and the maze section is now faster because chumtoad now has an turbine engine attached to it so it moves faster.
I don't care about any of that. It plays differently, I don't like the HL2 style of movement, physics, gameplay and so on.
The original classic works fine.
Idk about you but there are many people don't like Half-Life's AI (including myself) as they're can get stuck very easily, even the AI nodes around the map doesn't help much.
Especially you need to babysit Barney for the most of the game. Sure, you can leave him behind somewhere safe but still.
If you like the original, fine.
I'm just here to explain why people call the Source port is better. (I played both of them btw)
